A trip I planned
170 miles to Santiago
In 2025 I walked the Portuguese route of the Camino de Santiago — Porto to Santiago, 170 miles, three of us. I planned the whole thing.
We refused to get in a vehicle at any point. That was the rule, because we wanted the most authentic version of the Camino we could manage, and it's the decision everything else had to work around. We also stayed somewhere different every single night, which meant a stack of confirmation numbers, deposits, and details that all had to line up in the right order along a route we were covering at walking pace. And we carried everything on our backs.
The part I didn't plan for was the people. We were the only Americans on the route the entire way. Making friends across different ages, cultures, and languages was well outside my comfort zone, and it turned out to be the best thing about the trip.
I think about that when I'm planning for other people. The itinerary has to hold together, especially when there's no room for error. But the parts you remember are usually the ones nobody could have booked.
