December has a way of filling itself. The calendar tightens, the days shorten, and somewhere in the middle of it all is the quiet thought that you’d like to be warm, and unhurried, and somewhere else entirely.

This year, a few of us are going to be exactly that. In December, Tiffany Hines — our CEO — sails from Miami for ten days through the Eastern and Southern Caribbean aboard Silversea’s Silver Shadow, and she isn’t going alone. A hosted sailing means she’s traveling with the guests who join her: same ship, same ports, same long dinners, same afternoon on the water.

 

What a hosted sailing actually is

It’s a small thing that changes a great deal.

On a hosted sailing, your advisor is aboard. Not on call from an office three time zones away — actually there, at breakfast, on the tender, in the lounge before dinner. She knows the ship. She knows the ports. And she knows the people traveling with her, because she planned their trips.

What that produces is hard to put on a brochure. It’s the table that grows by two people every night. It’s someone telling you which side of the ship to be on when you come into Basseterre. It’s the group of strangers who, by the second sea day, are no longer strangers.

You can travel entirely on your own within it — no one is herding anybody. But the option to belong to something is there from the moment you board.

 

Ten days, and the islands you don’t usually get

The route reads like a list of places people mean to visit and rarely do.

Out of Miami, across open water, and into San Juan. Then Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands — a place small enough that arriving by ship is genuinely the good way to arrive. Saint John, then Philipsburg in St. Maarten. Basseterre in St. Kitts, green and steep and layered with history.

Then the stretch that makes this itinerary what it is: Little Bay, Montserrat — an island most cruise routes simply pass. Les Saintes, the cluster of small French islands off Guadeloupe, where the pace is nearer to a village than a port. And Fort-de-France, Martinique, which is French in a way that surprises people who expect the Caribbean to be one thing.

Eight ports in ten days sounds ambitious. Aboard a ship this size, it isn’t. Small ships tender into harbors the large ones can’t enter, and you’re ashore in minutes rather than in queues.

 

Why Silversea, and why the Silver Shadow
