Honeymoon. The very word conjures up relaxing images of white sands, clear waters, and fruity drinks. But what if you crave something unusual for your first vacation together as a married couple? Something beyond the beaches that offers a mix of adventure, culture, and cuisine?

Argentina is gaining popularity as a honeymoon destination, thanks to its wide variety of activities, rich history, stunning architecture, and jaw-dropping landscapes.

Flights arrive several times each day into the bustling capital city of Buenos Aires, which makes it an ideal place to begin and end your honeymoon. The European influence permeates everything from the architecture to the general way of life. Here, you can tour well preserved historic sites, experience a romantic tango performance, pamper yourself at a first-class spa, get lost in the artistic old neighborhood of La Boca, or immerse yourself in the local soccer culture. With a variety of luxury hotels available, Buenos Aires is a fantastic spot to bookend the trip, with the more scenic destinations sandwiched in between.

Convenient regular flights from Buenos Aires to other cities and towns throughout Argentina make the entire country accessible. After soaking in the vibrant culture of Buenos Aires, it’s time to escape to nature. The Andes mountains, lowlands, plains, and grasslands all make up the magical region known as Patagonia, which spans both Argentina and Chile.

One Northern Patagonia area not to miss in is the lake district, particularly the Alpine-style town of San Carlos de Bariloche. Situated between two turquoise lakes—Moreno and Nahuel Huapi—Bariloche offers a wide variety of outdoor activities…from skiing to hiking to cruising the pristine waters. However, the Victoria Island Tour in Nahuel Huapi National Park is the crown jewel of this region. Two of the three areas are off limits to the public; however, our close relationships with the locals allow us to grant our clients access to this paradise, where they can traverse private trails and take in the scenery from some lesser known vantage points.

The Mendoza region on the western side of Argentina has become a draw for wine-loving honeymooners. The Malbec grape reigns supreme, but several other robust varietals are grown in this area. The Andes mountains are the backdrop for a single road running through Mendoza dotted with bodegas, or wineries, each with their own charm.

Also in the West is Salta, an area quite similar in landscape to Utah or New Mexico. This area was the southernmost outpost of the Inca Empire, whose folklore and culture live on in the small towns.

In Southern Patagonia, Los Glaciares National Park’s rugged landscapes and climate facilitate unique activities such as ice trekking, photo safaris, horseback riding, or hot air ballooning. Nearly 50 large and 200 small glaciers constitute at least half of the area.

Moving to the Southern tip of Argentina—which is also the world’s Southernmost point of land—is Ushuaia, known as the Fin del Mundo or “end of the world.” While many honeymooners flock here simply to take photos at this landmark, Ushuaia offers natural beauty unlike anywhere else on the planet. Easy walking trails through the coastal national park of Tierra del Fuego run north from the dramatic Beagle Channel to the gorgeous Lapataia Bay. Penguin Island, known to locals as Isla Martillo, is a short day trip, where you can be one of the privileged few to walk with gentoo and Magellanic penguins.

In stark contrast to Ushuaia’s icy glaciers and towering mountains sits Iguazu. Here, the peaceful rainforest blends with the roaring waters of Iguazu Falls to create a mesmerizing utopia, where you can do as little or as much activity as you desire. Blood-pumping boat rides into the falls get you up close and personal to this natural wonder, while the scenic overlooks along the walking trails allow less adventurous couples to marvel from a safe distance.

The article recognizes Hines and Global Escapes for remarkable growth over the last six years, and it highlights Hines as a leader in the travel industry due to her creative business practices, her focus on service, and her drive and determination.

Hines and her business have received much recognition recently, as she was elected to the Board of Directors for the American Society of Travel Advisors this past summer. Earlier this year, she took home the Small Business Administration’s Women in Business Champion Award and the Junior League of Athens’ Angel Award. She is an active member of the Travel Agency Management Solutions (TAMS) group and is a past member of the Signature Travel Network’s marketing and training committees.

Administrative Assistant

A caretaker at heart, Abbey has always enjoyed serving others. She warmly welcomes our clients and takes tremendous care of them each day. Abbey became hooked on travel at age three when she visited Cancun with her family, and she can still taste the seedless watermelon that she feasted on at the swim-up bar. A mission trip to the Dominican Republic in high school reinforced her need to see the world. Since that time, exploring Dunn’s River Falls in Jamaica ranks at the top of her travel experiences.

A self-described beach bum, Abbey’s travel dreams include relaxing in Fiji with her husband Jackson; exploring the landscapes of Costa Rica, New Zealand, and Australia; and immersing themselves the history and culture of Spain, Greece, and Italy.

Outside of the office, you can find Abbey playing softball, shopping, and creating memories with her family and her dogs–Lucy, a full-blooded lab, and Libby, a bull mastiff-lab mix. Through her work as a board member of the Kimberley Chance Atkins foundation, she helps raise money to assist breast cancer patients with little to no insurance.

Jenny

Corporate Travel Advisor

Here at Global Escapes, Jenny is focused on business travel; however, she offers more than 35 years of experience in planning both vacation and corporate travel. A native of England (you’d never know it by her charming Southern accent), Jenny moved to the United States with her family at age 14 and graduated from Cedar Shoals High School. She has weathered many storms in the travel industry throughout her career, but she still loves how every day is different and she never knows what challenges she will be helping to solve. Although she has traveled to many destinations around the world, her bucket list is not yet complete. She hopes to someday road trip through the National Parks, explore Australia, and photograph the Big Five in Africa with her husband and two adult children. Outside of the office, Jenny can be found chatting on the phone with her mum, who still lives in England; horseback riding; enjoying a margarita at one of Athens’ local restaurants; or pet-sitting for neighbors.

Building relationships with our clients is the foundation of Global Escapes, and Hannah embodies that spirit to the fullest. Our newest travel advisor, she quickly won the hearts of our clients, who have praised her infectious enthusiasm, ability to truly empathize with their needs, and assist when help is needed most. A self-proclaimed beach girl, Hannah’s most memorable travel experiences include adventuring in Hawaii for two weeks with her family; exploring the seaside villages of Nova Scotia during a work assignment; and traveling to Jamaica, where the residents’ authentic joy despite financial hardships changed her life. When she’s not researching unique itineraries for her clients, you can find Hannah cracking us up with her terrible puns, organizing get togethers for the Young Professionals Network, heading up the silent auction for Extra Special People’s Big Hearts fundraiser, or bouncing around concert venues.

Leisure travel consulting company Global Escapes and its sister company Corporate Connections recently announced the addition of four new team members.

Jenny Owensby and Kourtney Prater bring their impressive skills to complement the Corporate Connections team, which assists business travelers with their logistical needs. Hannah Angel joins forces with Global Escapes to create unique leisure travel experiences, while Abbey Beckham supports both entities as an administrative assistant.

“With this most recent addition of four dynamic women, we have an even stronger foundation on which to build as we expand to meet the growing needs of our leisure and corporate travelers,” said Tiffany Hines, Global Escapes and Corporate Connections CEO. “Our motivated, talented team members seamlessly provide the knowledge and customer service that our clients have come to expect.”

• Jenny Owensby brings more than 35 years of leisure, group, and corporate travel advising expertise to the team. Owensby attended the University of Georgia and the Omni School of Travel.
• Kourtney Prater comes to Corporate Connections with nearly a decade of experience in customer service, management, and inventory control, most recently at Carvana. A Jackson County native, Prater has garnered customer relationship management skills through her work in various industries, from food and beverage to manufacturing.
• Hannah Angel offers a 10-year history of exceeding personal sales goals in the retail industry, most recently at The Cloister Collection in downtown Athens. A University of Georgia graduate, Angel brings strong customer relationship and marketing skills to the leisure team at Global Escapes. Angel additionally has acquired extensive leadership, marketing, fundraising, event planning, and networking skills as a volunteer with the Junior League of Athens and Extra Special People.
• Abbey Beckham supports both Global Escapes and Corporate Connections as an administrative assistant. She brings extensive communications, customer service, and support experience from her background in the education and nonprofit space. Her nurturing personality has been developed through her years of working with special needs students and with victims of domestic violence through previous professional and volunteer positions. But enough about me. Crete stole my heart from the moment my flight touched down and I felt the warm wind blowing through my hair. I was immediately greeted by warm and friendly locals, and I basked in the feeling that I was among locals – not a tourist in sight.

Crete is the largest island in Greece and is also the southernmost point in Europe – just 200 miles from the coast of northern Africa. It’s known for its laid-back vibe, friendly locals, and fresh produce. This island has the unique ability to self-sustain its own food supply, and much of the land is dedicated to farming. It’s also a mountainous island with a vast chain dividing the north and south coastlines from end to end. Throughout the island you’ll find small picturesque villages nestled in natural bays, many of which are home to boutique hotels that offer warm and upscale accommodations on pristine beaches.

Other islands that have great appeal for similar reasons include Ios, Paros, and Naxos, all of which are scattered in the waters between Santorini and Mykonos. They’re easy to combine with an itinerary that covers these more highly trafficked destinations and would offer a welcome quiet reprieve for a few days. All have charming port towns crammed with unique shops selling handmade items, local restaurants serving authentic fresh food, and gorgeous beaches where you have a high chance of spending the day on a stretch of pebbly shoreline all to yourself.

The reasons to get off the beaten path in the Greek islands are numerous – secluded and peaceful beaches, fantastic food and wine experiences, and the opportunity to interact with locals. The Greek people are naturally warm and welcoming, and even if you run into a bit of a language barrier, rest assured that they are dedicated to hospitality and will make every effort to both communicate clearly and understand your needs.

Crystal clear waters and hidden coves, blue-domed churches and whitewashed homes, windmills and ancient archeological finds. This is the Greece we’ve all heard about and long for…images we’ve gathered in our minds from movies, magazines, and jet-setter friends who make us green with envy.

Greece is all these things and more, from the mainland to the islands. It’s brimming with old-world beauty, friendly locals, and the best food imaginable. Even for the most well-heeled travelers, it is a destination worthy of their bucket lists.

Let’s start with what most will consider must-see sites on their first visit – Athens, Mykonos, and Santorini. These are the Greek names that are most familiar on our tongues, and despite their well-earned reputations as tourist hotspots, they are truly spectacular and worthy of exploration.

Athens is the point of entry for most travelers, as its Eleftherios Venizelos Airport connects many of the major cities in Europe and the U.S. Admittedly, you’ll arrive rumpled and bleary-eyed after a long overnight journey, but as views of the Acropolis come into your line of sight along the way into the city center, your excitement will build and curiosity will take over. Athens is both old and new at once and straddles this dichotomy beautifully. Walking through the ancient narrow lanes of the Plaka with the smell of fresh bread and sunbaked stone in your nostrils, you’ll also be accompanied by the busy sounds of construction as the city continues to grow and thrive all around you.

You’ll want to hit the well-known sites such as the Acropolis and its stellar museum, the ancient Agora, Temple of Zeus, Syntagma Square, and the Panathenaic Stadium, as well as make time for some leisurely shopping and dining in the Plaka. But be sure to slow down long enough to enjoy the city’s rich local culture. Wander the quieter streets of the Anafiotika neighborhood, adjacent to the Plaka but worlds away by experience. Visit the Psiri district for some truly amazing local food. Spend an evening combing through a local “laiki” farmer’s market, or an entire day hiking through Parnitha National Park and exploring the ruins of the former Tatoi Royal Palace.

In direct contrast to ancient Athens, the island of Mykonos is the modern party hotspot of the sunny Cycladic islands. Accessible by a short flight or ferry ride, this island almost throbs with activity and youth. Numerous chic hotels hug the many coves around the coastline, and guests can enjoy soaking up the sun while sipping cocktails at the swanky beach clubs. Scorpios, the most well-known nightlife venue, is found just south of Mykonos town on a jutting peninsula. Here, the music pulses long into the night as tourists and locals alike dance their hearts out under the lanterns swaying in the palm trees. But don’t be fooled – Mykonos offers more than just beaches and partying. The old port town is crammed with charming shops full of handmade goods, and its cobbled lanes offer some of the most photographed scenes in the Mediterranean. The island of Delos, just offshore, offers a unique archeological experience that takes just half a day, so you can invest in some education AND relaxation all in one day!

By now you are beginning to understand why so many travelers have Greece on their bucket list, but peaceful Santorini provides the icing on the cake. This island is one of the most recognizable in the Mediterranean, known for its cliff-side hotels overlooking the stunning caldera, all framed by whitewashed homes and blue-domed chapels.

It’s a peaceful and dreamy island, perfect for couples looking for an escape from reality. While beaches are scarce here, the views are not. Santorini’s entire western coastline forms what is left of an ancient volcanic crater, and its sheer cliffs plunge down into clear cerulean waters dotted with sailboats, catamarans, and cruise ships. Dozens of hotels line the cliff edge, offering bespoke accommodations. Many are true to the island’s history of cave-dwelling and are actually built into the historic caves once occupied by locals. Private pools, sun-drenched terraces, and warm attentive service are the norm here. Santorini is the perfect last stop on your travel through Greece – a serene place to wind down, relax, and recharge before being dragged back to reality.

Greece offers far too much depth of experience to be summed up in a handful of destinations, and certainly more than a few words and images can capture. Global Escapes CEO Tiffany Hines Earns Prestigious Small Business Award

The U.S. Small Business Administration’s Georgia District Office has hand-selected Tiffany Hines, owner of Global Escapes in Athens, GA, for the Women in Business Champion Award, one of eight coveted 2019 Small Business Week Awards. Hines was the only recipient from the Athens Area. She will be honored at a ceremony scheduled for May 2 in Atlanta.

“These awards aren’t just about recognizing business success; they also are focused on recognizing the efforts of small business advocates that support and empower entrepreneurs,” said Terry Denison, the director of the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Georgia District office.

Hines was nominated for the award by Laura Katz, area director for the Small Business Development Center at the University of Georgia.

“Tiffany has stood out to me because she invests time and energy into her team members in order to help them achieve ever-elevating goals,” Katz said. “In Tiffany’s mind, there is always more to learn, more to achieve, and more to do in order to help others.”

“I am humbled to be named the 2019 Women in Business Champion for Georgia,” said Hines. “I have been an advocate for women in the work force my entire life, and my mission within my own company is to enable women to have it all…a thriving career, a family, and time for self-care.”

Hines’ mother, Ella Grondahl, started Global Escapes in 1988 when Hines was a student at the University of Georgia. Since taking the helm in 2008, Hines has not only transformed the way Global Escapes does business, but she has also helped the travel industry redefine its place in an ever-changing world.

Hines is an active member of the Travel Agency Management Solutions (TAMS) group and is a past member of the Signature Travel Network’s marketing and training committees. She recently took home Travel Weekly’s Magellan Award, as well as the Kaizen Award from her TAMS group.

Outside of the office, you can find her at a business function, most likely with the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce, which she serves as a board member. She also is involved with the Junior League of Athens, The Oconee County Chamber of Commerce, and the American Heart Association.

On top of all the energy she funnels into her business, her focus remains on working with her husband Chris to raise their two daughters to also be strong, independent leaders. She has made it a point to show them the world and to lead by example so that they, too, will one day be exceptional leaders.

Annually, since 1963, the president of the United States has issued a proclamation calling for the first week in May to be celebrated as National Small Business Week. There are national events planned in Washington, DC., New York City, Indianapolis, Dallas, and Fresno, GA, commemorating this special time.

Kenya Will Capture Your Heart

It was finally happening. After years of reading books and articles, watching countless documentaries, and even planning unique safari itineraries for my clients, I was here at last. As I emerged from the Nairobi airport, my senses were immediately assaulted by all things Kenyan. The buzz of traffic and sounds of Swahili filled my ears, the brilliant sunshine felt warm on my shoulders, and the constant dust swirling in the air filled my nostrils. Absolutely perfect. With a week of traveling by SkySafari with Elewana ahead, even the jet lag couldn’t dampen my excitement.

My time in Nairobi was short-lived but meaningful, feeling like an excerpt from the film Out of Africa. As I walked around the house and grounds of Karen Blixen’s historic home, which is now a museum to her life and work, I could almost feel the love this extraordinary woman had for Kenya, for its wildlife and natural beauty, and most of all for its people. While not a born native, Blixen connected with this land in a unique way, and it forever left its mark on her. Little did I know that we would soon share much in common.

Before leaving Nairobi, and due to the persistence and influence of my safari guide, I unexpectedly found myself at Giraffe Manor. This small hotel and game reserve is known worldwide for its dedicated work in protecting the endangered Rothschild giraffes and is notoriously exclusive with a 2-year waiting list. In no time at all, I was surrounded by the friendly giants, most notably Ed, the patriarchal male of the herd. Kenyans consider it good luck to be “kissed” by a giraffe, and Ed was happy to oblige by leaving a trail of sticky glue-like residue on my right cheek.

From Nairobi we were off in to the horizon – quite literally, in a small Cessna Grand Caravan. What I expected to be a practical bush plane was in reality a plush and cozy cabin, complete with swiveling leather bucket seats to maximize viewing opportunities while in flight.  Now THIS I could get used to.

As we traveled around Kenya by private plane, we were able to take in a great depth of experiences that are inherent to Kenya’s beauty – observing the majestic rhinos in grazing Meru, getting up close and personal with a pride of lions sunbathing on the rocks at Loisaba, waking up to the clamor of baboons on my tent porch one morning, walking through fresh lion paw prints on my way to breakfast in Sand River, and observing the rich tribal heritage thriving in the local villages near the Elephant Pepper Camp.

I’ve always viewed Kenya through a somewhat homogenous lens – wide open vistas filled with lots of wildlife. What I did not expect was the wide range of colors, temperatures, atmospheres, and cultures that span this beautiful place. While the natural beauty is a common thread throughout, the tapestry of this country is more diverse and unique than I had imagined.

I believe that travel changes people – hearts, minds, and spirits – and returning home a bit different is not uncommon for me; but I must say that Kenya was different. This journey has done more than simply change the way I view places or people. In addition to those things, I also felt a sense of belonging, peace, and confidence here that I’ve never experienced elsewhere. Several events drove this feeling home in a personal way…sitting in rigid silence with my heart pounding in my ears as a female elephant charged our Land Rover before sliding to a stop mere feet away, spotting a cheetah cub hiding in the underbrush while waiting for its mother, and sitting around the fire enjoying sundowner each evening to the sound of lions roaring very close by.

Something about this earthy, rustic, and perilous destination heightened my senses, created awareness of my own vulnerability, and made me feel more alive than ever. It was real – everything about it was refreshingly authentic, from the brutal struggle for survival among the wildlife to the meticulous tribal garb worn every day by the locals in remote villages.

Kenya spoke directly to my heart and has carved out a place there where it will forever reside. I have no doubt that I will return to this beautiful land, and that it will always feel like coming home because it now lives within me. The Monteverde Cloud Forest

Natural Wonders

Do waterfalls drive you wild? Do you love to gawk at geysers? Iceland has plenty of both, particularly in the famed Golden Circle. Experiencing these natural wonders during the winter months adds a special kind of unforgettable magic that you will talk about for years to come.

There are so many waterfalls throughout Iceland that it would be impossible to name them all. However, seeing as many as possible during your visit is highly recommended, as each one is unique. Godafoss—the Waterfall of the Gods—was so named when the chieftain hurled idols of the Norse gods into the falls to symbolize the country’s conversion to Christianity.

Gullfoss, or The Golden Waterfall, is the country’s most popular waterfall, dropping 32 meters down into two tiers.

Just around the corner from Gullfoss on the Golden Circle Route is the Geysir Hot Spring Area. Geysir itself hasn’t erupted in years, but the Strokkur geyser just a few steps away never disappoints, spouting 100 feet into the air every ten minutes or so.

Although geysers and waterfalls are stunning, the most anticipated natural phenomenon in Iceland is the Northern Lights. Highly visible in the winter, the dancing green and purple spectacles appear around 11 p.m. on nights with few clouds and in areas far from city lights. If the Northern Lights are on your bucket list, visiting Iceland over the holidays is likely to be the right time for your wish to come true.

Chill Out

Although Iceland offers plenty of outdoor adventure, it’s also an amazing place to visit if you crave a slower pace during the holidays. What could be more relaxing than hot springs? In Iceland, which sits on top of a geothermal “hot spot,” they are everywhere. Of course, the most well-known geothermal spring is the famous Blue Lagoon. However, less populated springs such as the Secret Lagoon and the Myvatn Nature Baths offer healing minerals and relaxing waters without all the crowds.

Simply meandering through cities such as Reykjavik and Akureyri, decked in holiday splendor, is relaxing in and of itself. Attend a traditional Christmas concert, enjoy a spin around an ice-skating rink, stroll through a Christmas market, or check out the famous Christmas House. After you settle into the holiday spirit, enjoy a traditional Icelandic holiday meal of lamb, caramel-glazed potatoes, and leaf bread.
